Chest Freezers with Auto Defrost: What Actually Exists

We could not find a chest freezer with auto defrost on sale. Not one of the chest freezers we list is frost free, and searching the market for one returns manual-defrost chests with names like “easy defrost drain” and, occasionally, a frost-free upright mixed into the results. If you came here looking for a frost-free chest, the honest answer is that it is not a product you can buy, and the rest of this page is about the two things you can do instead.

If auto defrost is the non-negotiable, buy an upright: the BLACK+DECKER 14 cu ft convertible is the one we list that BLACK+DECKER publishes as frost free. If you would rather keep a chest's capacity and efficiency, buy one with an exterior defrost drain — that is the feature that makes manual defrost a twenty-minute job instead of an afternoon.

The finding: they are not really sold

One frost-free row, and it is an upright. That is the whole category in one table.

Why chest freezers are manual defrost

A frost-free freezer works by circulating air over a hidden evaporator coil and periodically warming that coil so the frost it has collected melts and drains away. Two things follow, and both of them are why the design sits badly in a chest:

• It needs forced air circulation. An upright has a cabinet the air can be blown around. A chest is a well that works precisely because cold, dense air sits still in it and does not fall out when you open the lid. Adding a fan fights the thing that makes a chest efficient.
• It runs a heater on a cycle. Warming the coil to clear frost means the cabinet warms slightly too, on a schedule, forever. That is a real trade against long-term frozen quality, and it costs energy.

That is also why a chest generally uses less electricity than an upright of the same size. ENERGY STAR's own figures put a certified chest at roughly 215 kWh a year against about 395 for a certified upright, which is the trade you are making when you buy frost free. What does exist, and what it costs you

The frost-free option on our list is the BLACK+DECKER 14 cu ft convertible upright. Going that way costs you three things, and it is worth naming them before you do:

1. Energy. Frost-free uprights use materially more than a chest of the same capacity.
2. Usable capacity. Shelves and an evaporator take volume a chest gives to food, and an upright holds slightly less meat per cubic foot.
3. Hold-over time. A chest keeps its cold far longer in a power cut, because the cold air stays in the well when the lid is shut.

The spec to buy instead: an exterior drain

If you are keeping a chest — and for storing a season of meat you probably should — the feature that does most of what people want from auto defrost is a drain at the bottom of the cabinet with an exterior plug. With one, defrosting is: unplug, open the lid, put a pan under the drain, pull the plug, walk away, wipe out, refill. Without one, it is towels and a shop vac.

How often a chest freezer actually needs defrosting

Less often than the dread suggests. Frost comes from humid air entering the cabinet, so it builds at the rate you open the lid and how humid the room is — not on a schedule. A chest freezer holding a season of venison, opened a few times a week, typically needs it about once a year, and the usual trigger is frost thick enough to stop the lid sealing.

Things that genuinely reduce it: keep the freezer full (less air to swap), open it decisively rather than browsing, make sure the gasket seals, and do not put warm food in. A chest in a damp garage will frost faster than one in a dry basement, which is another reason to read our garage freezer page before siting it.

Time the job for when the freezer is nearly empty — late in the season, before the next animal. Move what is left into coolers with the frozen packs stacked tight and they will hold easily for the hour it takes.
