Vacuum Sealers with a Mason Jar Attachment: Which Ones Actually Have the Port

A jar attachment is useless without somewhere to plug it in. The spec that decides this whole category is the accessory port, and plenty of otherwise good sealers do not have one.

If you want to vacuum-seal mason jars, the machine to buy is the Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer Pro: it has the accessory port and ships the hose, and Anova names canning jar lids among what the port drives. The attachment to buy is the FoodSaver jar sealer that fits regular and wide mouth and includes the accessory hose — not the wide-mouth-only version, which costs more and states plainly that its air tube is not included.

The accessory port is the whole spec

A jar attachment is a lid that sits on the jar with a hose running to the machine. The machine pulls air through that hose instead of through a bag. So the question is never “does this sealer work with jars” — it is does this sealer have a port for the hose. If it does not, no attachment on the market will make it work.

This trips people up because the port is rarely in the headline specs. It hides in the compatibility bullet at the bottom of a listing, under names like accessory port, accessory hose, canister function or container mode. They are all the same thing.

Which sealers have one

SealerAccessory portHose in the boxWhat the maker calls it
Anova Precision ProYesYes“An added accessory port and hose” for “canning jar lids”
FoodSaver V4400YesNo“Optional accessories include FoodSaver regular and wide mouth mason jar sealers”
Nesco VS-22LBYesNot stated“Canister” function
Nesco VS-12Not published—Modes listed are Dry, Moist and Double seal only
LEM MaxVac 250 / 500Not published—LEM publishes no accessory port for these
Chamber machinesNo — and they do not need one—A jar goes in the chamber whole

Note the last row, because it is a genuinely different answer. A chamber machine does not take a jar attachment; you put the open jar inside the chamber, and when the chamber is evacuated and vented the lid seats itself. If you already own a chamber sealer you do not need any of this.

Which jar attachment to buy

There are two FoodSaver jar sealers and the difference is not obvious from the price:

Jar sealer with accessory hoseT03-0023-01P wide-mouth sealer
FitsRegular AND wide mouthWide mouth only
Accessory hoseIncludedNot included, per FoodSaver
Dishwasher safeYesYes
Maker's suggested contentsSauces, mustards, jamsLiquids, sauces, fragile foods, dry goods

Buy the first one. It covers both jar mouths, so one purchase does the whole cupboard, and the hose is the part you cannot improvise.

What jar sealing is actually good for

Jars beat bags at a specific set of jobs, and it is worth knowing which before you buy the attachment:

  • Dry goods that go stale rather than off — coffee, nuts, flour, spice rubs, jerky cure. A jar is rigid, reusable and you can see the contents.
  • Fragile things a bag would crush — crackers, dried herbs, freeze-dried fruit.
  • Anything you reopen constantly. A jar re-vacuums in seconds; a bag has to be cut and resealed, losing an inch of film every time.
  • Liquids in the fridge — stock, sauces, marinades. No bag mouth to keep clean.

What jars are bad at is the thing this site mostly does: freezing meat in quantity. Glass takes far more freezer volume per pound than a flat bag, and a sealed jar in a chest freezer is a stacking problem. For venison, see vacuum sealer bags instead.

What it doesn't

  • Plastic body, per Anova's own spec list
  • Maximum bag width isn't published

How we picked

Units we claim to have bench-tested: none

Plenty of sites say they ground two hundred pounds through every grinder. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the maker's spec sheet, manual and warranty terms, record the figures that decide whether a machine keeps up with your season (size number, motor rating, rated pounds per minute, capacity, duty cycle, gearing), check parts availability, and score each pick on a published rubric. Then we show the season math — pounds per deer from the Ohio Division of Wildlife's yield study — so you can redo it with your own numbers.

Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not lab results. Nobody pays for placement. The rubric and weights are on the How We Pick page.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which vacuum sealers work with mason jar attachments?
Any sealer with an accessory port for a hose. Among the machines we list that is the Anova Precision Pro (port and hose included), the FoodSaver V4400 (FoodSaver names its own jar sealers as accessories) and the Nesco VS-22LB via its Canister function. If a sealer has no port, no attachment will work with it.
Which FoodSaver jar sealer should I buy?
The one that fits both regular and wide mouth and includes the accessory hose. The wide-mouth-only T03-0023-01P costs more, fits fewer jars, and FoodSaver states its plastic air tube is not included.
Is vacuum sealing a mason jar the same as canning?
No. It removes air; it does not heat-process the food or make it shelf-stable. Dry goods that were already shelf-stable stay in the cupboard; anything perishable still belongs in the fridge or freezer, and anything you are genuinely preserving needs a tested canning method.
Can you vacuum seal jars with a chamber sealer?
Yes, and you need no attachment at all: the open jar goes inside the chamber, and the lid seats as the chamber vents. If you already own a chamber machine, skip the jar attachment entirely.
What is worth storing in a vacuum-sealed jar?
Dry goods that go stale (coffee, nuts, flour, cure mixes), fragile things a bag would crush, anything you reopen often, and liquids in the fridge. Not bulk frozen meat — glass wastes freezer volume compared with a flat-packed bag.
